19A NCAC 06D .0205. MAINTENANCE OF BICYCLE FACILITIES AND BIKEWAYS

  • The state highway system shall be maintained in a manner conducive to bicycle safety, consistent with the following guidelines:

    (1)           State built bikeways and secondary bicycle facilities within the right‑of‑way are to be maintained to the same degree as the state highway system.

    (2)           Existing parallel drainage grates are to be replaced with bicycle safe drainage grates where bicycle usage is evidenced through bicycle traffic data, or where bicycle accidents have been recorded.  All other parallel drainage grates (with the curbing) shall be painted in the manner indicated in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

    (3)           Other factors being equal, priority for highway maintenance (shoulder, potholes, repaving, edges, debris, etc.) is to be as follows:

    (a)           highways with known bicycle traffic,

    (b)           bicycling highways routes, and

    (c)           highways providing access to recreation areas.
