The State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) (the Director, Division of Archives and History, Department of Cultural Resources) may designate buildings that possess historic and architectural significance as historic properties for building code purposes. This designation entitles the owners of such significant buildings to "special consideration" in relation to certain building code requirements if the buildings are adapted for public exhibition or commercial use.
