19A NCAC 06D .0204. CONSTRUCTION OF BICYCLE FACILITIES AND BIKEWAYS

  • Bicycle transportation facilities shall be constructed in conjunction with state and federal highway projects, consistent with the following guidelines:

    (1)           Bicycle transportation facilities are to be constructed in accordance with priorities as established by the Transportation Improvement Program or the Secondary Roads Program.

    (2)           Bicycle safe drainage grates are to be installed (within the curbing) on all new construction and highway improvement projects.

    (3)           Other factors being equal, priority for the construction or improvement of paved shoulders is to go to:

    (a)           highways with known bicycle traffic,

    (b)           bicycling highways routes, and

    (c)           highways providing access to recreation areas.

    (4)           The Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation staff of the Department of Transportation shall provide technical assistance to local governments in the design of bikeways and secondary bicycle facilities along abandoned railroad rights‑of‑way.
